Noemi's Notes No. 8 – Happy New Year!

Noemi's Notes No. 8

January 16

Happy New Year, friends! I hope this finds you well.

For me, and I'm sure for many people, the holidays are a break from the normal schedule – but that doesn't mean I'm not busy. What with all the family gatherings, travels, snow days and parties, this last season felt restful and full at the same time, as it often does.

That fullness meant that I took a break from my normal art and business work. But I did get some designing done, as I'm trying to build up my portfolio and get some new products ready for spring markets.

One of my favorite adventures over the holidays was a day trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.

My family and I spent the better part of a day there, and only saw about half of the museum's amazing collection. I was fascinated by all the things I saw – unusual use of textiles, skillful light and shadow contrast, and simple, yet impactful, sketches. I hope I can go back soon to see the rest of the museum's exhibits.

On the drive to and from the museum, I started reading The Short Story of Women Artists by Susie Hodge. I like how it gives just a quick overview of important works, movements, and artists.

There is so much art and so much to learn about it – studying it should keep me occupied for a while!

Q&A

Q: What materials do you use for your folk-art paintings?

A: Watercolor is the basis for most of each painting, but I use white ink for details and black pen for the characteristic black dots. If you want to know more, you can grab my free materials guide here.

Do you have a question about me or my work? I want to know! Submit one below for me to answer next month.

And now it's back to the usual routines for me. I have lots of art-making to do while it's still snowy and I can hole up in my studio for hours on end :)

Cheers!
